Horizon has thus far developed Magic Porthole™ thanks to a Planning Grant from The National Science Foundation for Informal Science Education, and support from Peter and Helen Haje, other individuals, several supporters for Horizon’s filming in Bonaire (by Oscar-winning cinematographer Nick Caloyianis), and substantial contributions of talent and services.

The five reef creature characters are based on actual creatures to represent learning-type role models with different abilities and preferences. They were chosen and designed with input from the Psychology of Ability, Competencies, and Expertise Center (PACE) at Tufts University (formerly at Yale).
